Inuyasha and Kagome were in front, with Shippou on Kagome’s shoulder, and Miroku and Sango were walking slightly behind. They had been following the power of two jewel shards that Kagome had sensed yesterday and were still behind whatever was carrying it. At first Kagome had thought it might be Kouga, but that was easily dispelled by having Inuyasha smell for Kouga’s scent. To Inuyasha, the wolf scent was like a beacon in the night, so easily recognizable that he would never miss it, however Inuyasha did mention he had sensed that Sesshoumaru was nearby. Since they realized that, they had chased after it and gotten very close at times, but never within sight of whatever was carrying the shards…It was early evening by the time something happened…
Kagome suddenly stopped and gasped and Inuyasha likewise stopped.
“What is it Kagome?”
“The Jewel shards…they’ve reversed direction! Their heading straight for us!”
Inuyasha turned towards where Kagome was pointing just in time to see the trees sway back and forth as a huge gust of wind from something incredibly fast moving…Inuyasha caught a glimpse of something, but even to his heightened senses it was nothing but a blur. It moved faster than Kouga, even faster than Jeromaru and Kageromaru had!
“MIROKU! SANGO! GET CLOSE SO IT WON’T BE ABLE TO…”
It was too late, as the thing went straight for Miroku, knocking him to the ground hard enough to render him unconscious. Sango rushed to his side. Inuyasha cursed under his breath as he realized Sango would have to protect Miroku, leaving only Kagome, Shippou and himself able to fight offensively…Scratch that, he thought, just Kagome and I can really do anything…
The enemy flew in front of Inuyasha, who was barely able to raise Tetsusaiga in time to block a blow from whatever it was, and the enemy was flung back a few yards, and it sat there crouched for a moment, just long enough for them to see what it was.
It appeared to be some sort of cheetah like demon, and it hissed loudly at him with bared fangs, and lunged for him once more as he held up Tetsusaiga to block this strike, and was able to do so far easier than the last one as he saw this one coming.
“HIRAIKOTSU!” Sango hurled her weapon where the creature was and it struck nothing but air as Inuyasha turned at her.
“Sango! Don’t interfere! Just keep Miroku safe!” Sango looked worried for Inuyasha and Kagome, but nodded once as she caught the returning Hiraikotsu. As he was distracted the creature leapt at the Hanyou and roared in triumph as it caught him completely unawares and knocked him down, pinning his sword arm to the ground as it raised its arm for the killing blow…but it neglected the fact Inuyasha still had one arm free.
“IRON REAVER SOUL STEALER!” Inuyasha clawed at the creatures arm and it ducked quickly, but Inuyasha was able to grab it by the neck with his arm.
“Kagome! Shoot it already!” Kagome drew an arrow and aimed and fired…but the creature noticed, and attempted to turn to run, but with Inuyasha holding onto it it was only able to move back a few feet, and lift Inuyasha off the ground…as the sacred arrow struck the demon it howled, but the arrow didn’t stop…it pierced completely through the demon…and struck Inuyasha!
“Aaaaaahhhhhh!” The arrow’s sacred energy flared as it struck Inuyasha’s kimono and pierced his chest, throwing him a dozen feet back and he hit the ground once, and stayed motionless.
“No! INUYASHA!” Kagome rushed to Inuyasha’s fallen form as tears came from her eyes, and she knelt next to him and picked up his head.
“Ka…go…me…” Inuyasha’s once bright golden eyes were now a dull yellow, and as he said this they went blank and his eyes closed. Kagome reached for the arrow as tears fell down her face, and she pulled out the arrow from his chest as a hand touched her shoulder…It was Sango, and she didn’t say a word but merely knelt next to Kagome and put an arm around her shoulder. Miroku was just sitting up, and Shippou was standing next to Inuyasha looking very scared. Kagome then leaned down and laid her head on Inuyasha’s shoulder.
Kagome was able to make out between her sobs, “Inuyasha! I didn’t mean to…I…I’m so sorry Inuyasha…”, But Inuyasha was totally nonresponsive. Sango knew that Inuyasha needed to be cared for immediately if he was to have any chance at survival.
“Kagome…don’t blame yourself…”
“But…its all my fault…”
Miroku had by now walked over to them, stopping for a half second to gather the two jewel fragments that had hit the ground when the demon was eradicated, and walked over to Inuyasha and looked at the wound.
“We must take him at once to Kaede’s village. We have no time to waste…Sango please bandage his wound, I must speak with Shippou a moment.” Miroku said as he motioned for Shippou to come over. Shippou walked over somberly and Miroku took him aside and whispered to him…“Shippou, I need you to stay with Kagome and do whatever it takes to keep her spirits up. Can you do that for me?” “Ill try…” “Good.”
Miroku picked up the Tetsusaiga and put it in the sheathe hanging from Inuyasha’s kimono, and motioned for Sango to help him lift Inuyasha’s form from the ground. Sango laid down her Hiraikotsu, and they laid Inuyasha on top of it. They each grasped one of Hiraikotsu’s handles and began to carry him towards Kaede’s village…but both Sango and Miroku could sense that Inuyasha probably wouldn’t make it that far…But they had to try…
*12 Hours after the fight with the demon…*
Sango and Miroku were still carrying Inuyasha, and despite Shippou’s best efforts, Kagome still had tears streaming down her face. Inuyasha’s condition was slowly deteriorating, but Sango and Miroku didn’t have the heart to tell Kagome until they were sure they wouldn’t be able to make it.
“Kagome, you know Inuyasha has had worse wounds before…Remember when he fought Sesshoumaru, he was worse than this, and he healed up!” Shippou told Kagome, trying to keep her mind from thinking of what might happen, as Kagome sniffled.
“Your right…but even if he does live, it doesn’t change the fact that I…that I am the one who…who…” Kagome was unable to finish the sentence, and again started crying softly. Shippou was sad too, but still kept trying to ease Kagome’s mind.
“You couldn’t have known that was going to happen Kagome…and if you hadn’t shot that demon, it would’ve killed Inuyasha…and then the rest of us.”
Sango and Miroku laid the Hiraikotsu with Inuyasha’s limp form on it slowly and carefully down for a moment and Kagome looked at them extremely worried.
“Hes not…not…”
“No Kagome. We just need to change his bandages…I heard running water close by, can you take Shippou and gather some water please so we can clean the wound?”
Kagome nodded once quickly and grabbed Shippou’s hand and took off running towards the small stream just off the path they were following. Once Sango and Miroku saw that Kagome was no longer within earshot they spoke quietly.
“Sango…I fear hes not going to make it to Kaede’s. We will probably end up being about a days travel away when he…”
“I don’t know…like Shippou said, Inuyasha has had some pretty serious injuries before and been up and about far faster than I would’ve thought even a full demon could have been. I think we could make it.”
“Perhaps I do give him too little credit…honestly I am surprised he was not killed instantly by the force of Kagome’s sacred arrow of purification…We have both seen the destructive power of those arrows she and Kikyou can shoot…”
“Don’t give up on him Miroku. We are only a few hours and a days travel from Kaede’s…and if only for Kagome’s sake we have to stay optimistic.”
Miroku nodded in agreement, and Kagome ran back onto the path with a wet towel she had gotten from her backpack, and Shippou was behind her running as fast as he could and panting for breath. Miroku took the wet towel from Kagome and stood so that Kagome wouldn’t be able to see the wound as he undressed the old bandages. The wound was deep, and the arrow had pierced completely through his chest and out his back. There was no longer a hole in Inuyasha’s back, but Miroku was afraid that what little healing had happened wouldn’t be near enough. He cleaned the edges of the wound and redressed it, and then motioned for Sango to pick the Hiraikotsu with him on it up once more with him. With that they continued on towards Kaede’s village…
*30 hours since the fight with the demon...*
Miroku and Sango had had to stop again to rest…Inuyasha was fairly heavy, and they had to rest and eat a little so that they would not become unable to carry him. During the entirety of the short time they were resting Kagome never left Inuyasha’s side…her hand stroking through his hair gently, as her tears once more fell freely.
“Inuyasha…you can’t leave me alone like this…I need you…Please…hang on just a little longer…”
She ran her soft hands through his bangs once more and sniffled and wiped the tears from her face, and took Inuyasha’s hand in hers, holding it gently within both her hands. She closed her eyes and thought back on all the times she had thought of her feelings for Inuyasha…and how he had never told her if he felt the same. He couldn’t leave her like this…
Miroku and Sango had built a small fire, and they sat next to it.
“We have to try and get a few hours rest…if not we will be unable to take him further. I will take the first watch Sango.” Sango nodded as Miroku said this, and she laid down and tried to get a few hours rest before they would have to be on their way again. Miroku stood and walked to where they had laid down the Hiraikotsu with Inuyasha on top of it and where Kagome was watching Inuyasha for any signs of his regaining consciousness.
“Kagome…you need to rest.”
Kagome shook her head frantically, grasping Inuyasha limp hand tighter in her own.
“If it were me who were injured, Inuyasha wouldn’t leave my side to rest…How could I leave his?”
Miroku looked at her understanding, and walked to the other side of where Inuyasha lay so he could face Kagome.
“Kagome…He’s lucky to have you.”
Kagome bit back the tears that threatened to start anew. She knew in her head that she had been of great help to him, but in her heart all she could think of was that moment as the arrow struck Inuyasha, and their eyes connected, and then him whispering out her name just before he lost consciousness.
Miroku realized he wasn’t helping the situation, and returned to his spot by the fire and stayed on watch for three hours, until it was Sango’s turn, and then Miroku slept for three hours. A few hours after Miroku and Kagome had talked, Kagome had fallen asleep with her arm draped across Inuyasha’s chest…
*36 hours after the battle…*
It was still dark when Sango awoke Miroku, and they roused Kagome and Shippou as well. As before, Miroku gathered up the strap at the front of Hiraikotsu where Inuyasha’s head was, and Sango took the other strap. As they walked Kagome held one of Inuyasha’s hands in hers, and Shippou this time merely sat on Kagome’s shoulder. They walked in silence for hours, when they saw the first of the houses in the village and Kagome shouted “We made it!”. Kagome told Shippou to run ahead and tell Kaede about Inuyasha and they would take him to Kaede’s hut. As they walked through the village many of the villagers stopped what they were doing to approach the group and get a better look…
“Isn’t that Inuyasha?…I thought he was invincible…Wonder what happened…Poor girl…is he dead?…” Various villagers said to each other in hushed tones as Sango and Miroku carried Inuyasha to Kaede’s hut. Kaede and Shippou were already there waiting for them when they walked in, and Kaede laid a hand on Kagome’s shoulder and asked them all to wait outside a moment while she checked the extent of his wound. After looking at it for a moment she asked if Miroku would come in for a moment alone.
“Miroku…I fear that none of the treatments I have can treat a wound inflicted by a sacred arrow…whats worse…is that I think that Inuyasha will die within a few hours…”
Miroku merely nodded, and had been afraid that something like this would be the case. He had figured there was no way to heal a wound on a demon that had occurred due to a priests spiritual purification powers. Kaede told the others they could come back in, and Kagome once more took Inuyasha’s hand in hers. She gasped as his hand gripped hers of his own movement, and Inuyasha’s eyes opened slowly.
“Kagome…are you…alright?”
“Inuyasha, you’re the one injured…”
“Its…ok…as long as you’re ok…”
Kagome gasped slightly at this slight admission…it wasn’t much but it was more than he had told her before.
“Kagome…don’t blame…yourself…I…want you to be happy…”
“I cant be happy without you Inuyasha…”
“I’m very tired…I think I’ll just close my eyes for a minute…”
“Inuyasha…I…I love you.”
“I know Kagome…and…I…………..”
“Inuyasha?”
“……………………”
“INUYASHA!” Kagome shook him softly, but his open eyes stared blankly back at her; it was obvious there was no longer any life left in him. Kagome sobbed for a moment before running from the hut, out into the woods and they could hear her pained cries as she left, and Sango went to follow her. As Sango struggled to keep up with Kagome, she realized where Kagome was headed and sprinted as fast as she could to try and stop the distraught girl…but was too late as Kagome leapt down the bone eaters well and back to her own era.
Shippou, Miroku and Kaede were all merely staring at Inuyasha as he lay there…they were all as motionless as he for several minutes before Shippou said something…
“Miroku…we have a pr-problem…Sesshoumaru’s scent is getting closer!”
Miroku, Shippou and Kaede ran out of the hut just in time to see Sesshoumaru coming into the village and the guards held out their weapons.
“STATE YOUR INTENTIONS!”
Sesshoumaru had his hand on Tokijin’s hilt, ready to draw it if necessary…strangely neither Rin nor Jaken were with him.
“I have business with the hanyou you have here. Do not seek to bar my passage, or you shall die.”
They shrank back a bit from this but remained on guard as Kaede and the others approached Sesshoumaru.
“Sesshoumaru, what do you want with Inuyasha.”
“Has he perished?”
Kaede looked him straight in the eyes wondering how he knew about it, and Miroku had his staff at the ready, while Shippou looked at the ground when he asked if Inuyasha had died.
“Hm. Take me there. Now.”
Sesshoumaru took his hand from the hilt of Tokijin and walked past the guards towards Miroku and stood mere inches away from him.
“Are you deaf…I said take me to him.”
Miroku glanced to Kaede and Shippou, and realized that since Inuyasha was dead it couldn’t hurt.
“This way…”
As they approached the hut Sesshoumaru asked him another question.
“What was the cause of his death?”
“A sacred arrow.”
Sesshoumaru came to a full stop and turned towards them, his face as cold and impassionate as ever, but beneath it he was simmering in anger.
“Was it the dead priestess?”
“No…it was an accident. Kagome shot a demon and the arrow pierced through it and struck Inuyasha.”
“Hmh.”
They reached the hut and Sesshoumaru walked in and saw the fallen body of Inuyasha.
“Stand back. All of you.”
Sesshoumaru looked as if he was reaching for Tokijin…but he instead drew the Tenseiga.
“You’re…you’re going to revive him?”
“He is destined to die by my hand…and noone elses. I will not let a mere accident steal such a victory from me.”
With that he looked upon Inuyasha, and could see the minions that were trying to carry him off…and he cleaved through them. With that he merely left, saying nothing more. Inuyasha gasped in a lungful of air in a pained breath, and his eyes were a bright shining gold once more. His breath was ragged, but it was obvious he was going to live. Sango came in out of breath and looked at the once more living Inuyasha in surprise and she stated while out of breath….
“Kagome left for her own era…”
Upon hearing this, Inuyasha struggled to rise, lifting himself up with his Tetsusaiga.
“I have to go see her…before I transform into human and am unable to cross for a time.”
“Inuyasha your wounds…”
“They don’t matter! I have to see Kagome!”
*Back in the present*
Kagome is laying facedown on her bed crying into her pillow as she remembers all the journeys they had had together…and in the end she never knew if Inuyasha was going to say that he loved her too. Unbeknownst to Kagome, Inuyasha had just arrived in her time through the well and leapt up to the well house from the bottom and slowly walked to the sliding door and opened it quietly and looked up to her window, and seeing the light on and the window open he clutched one arm around his wound and leapt up to her windowsill without a sound…
“Why couldn’t he have lived long enough to tell me how he felt…*sob*”
“How do I feel? Pretty bad to be honest…” Inuyasha said as he crawled through the window slowly. Kagome shot up from where she was laying down and blinked several times.
“Are you really alive Inuyasha?”
“I don’t know how, but yes.”
Kagome ran to him and embraced him tightly, crying softly on his shoulder.
“What did you mean by I didn’t tell you how I felt?”
“You…never told me how you felt about me Inuyasha. And I was afraid that you would never get the chance…”
“Kagome…Do I even need to say it?”
Kagome thought back on all the times he had stood between her and something, all the times he’d stood up for her, and every time he had saved her.
“I guess…it really doesn’t need to be said does it Inuyasha?”
“No it doesn’t. But since you seemed to care…”
Kagome looked up into his golden eyes…
“Kagome…I love you.”
Kagome smiled and then kissed him quickly, and Inuyasha’s eyes widened and his cheeks flushed red at the unexpected kiss, but then he closed his eyes and held her close and held the kiss until they both had to break for breath.
“Your not mad about the arrow are you? I mean that’s what Kikyou…”
Inuyasha merely shook his head at the mention of Kikyou’s name.
“Kagome…Kikyou didn’t want to make a life with me until I used the Shikon Jewel to become human…she couldn’t accept me for who I was…but you do. And when Kikyou shot me, she did it for the purpose of killing me…you did it to save me. So don’t ever think that I would hold an accident against you…”
Kagome smiled broadly at Inuyasha as the last rays of the sun came over the horizon, and then Inuyasha began to glow, and his dog ears vanished, and his white hair changed to black.
“Oh, sorry I kept you too late…now you have to stay here, and I know how much you hate this era…”
“Kagome, if I’m with you, everything will be alright. Want to go for a walk?”
Kagome nodded eagerly and they left the house walking side by side, Kagome smiling brightly and Inuyasha looking up at the night sky, thinking to himself that finally he was complete. As they walked down the street Inuyasha took Kagome’s hand in his as they faded out of sight and into the night…
Good idea. *submits under penname Vorpal Bunny*
Also depending on if i get any reviews, I may write more. Would be interesting to see how this changes the relationship.
Edit: Wow, ive had the story up on animespiral less than like three hours and already gotten a review. I do believe ill be posting more, but for future chapters i will of course post here first, as it was your prompting that urged me to write more. Thanks for the encouragement.
It was great! It almost made me cry too!!! Only one thing you might of wanted to add....
Possibly, it might be sadder if you put more of the things they did on there... like when InuYasha was speaking to Kagome, right before he 'died' You shoulda said something like, She remimembers a time when he said something like that... only if you intended to make it sad and sappy that is!
whos? -sorry slow brain today- you mean vorpal bunny right? cause I have not posted ANY of mine EVER!!!
