i understand playstation 3 is going to have blue ray discs which hold a lot of space but will they make blue ray cd-r's, cd-rw's, dvd-r's, dvd-rw's, etc., so burnable cd's can hold more than 700MBs/80min?
I think they will in the future.
Acording to the info you just specifed... you are right. Blu-ray discs are said to be the UMD of consoles. Hopfully they will be able to make DVD and Audio CD versions of them sometime in 07-08 or maybe further in the future.
Sony and Microsoft are competing for the next form of CDs. Sony has every patent to Blu-Ray, so if it becomes mainstream, Sony gets rich. Microsoft has HD-DVD.
There will be Blu-Ray players and all that, as there will be HD-DVD players. There can't be "dvd-r" and "cd-r" and all of that, Blu-Ray is it's own type of storage medium.
It doesn't really matter though, Holographic storage will take over soon enough. 300 gigs of data on one CD, anyone? Plus the read speeds for Holography is much higher, I believe 10 gigs a second.
Well you can store more songs on an MP3 player.

Yeah... I think you see my point now.
I have a 1 gig mp3 player. =D
Not much songs with 1 gig, eh?
You understand "1 gig" right? 1,000 megabytes? =D
My computer has 40 gigs. 30 is alot for a little mp3 player, giving it over a 300 dollar price tag at least.
